The power of a chant – Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

Few years ago, when I faced the worst phase in my life, I went into a deep shell, isolating from the rest of the world.

Despite all the adversities and tough circumstances, what kept me alive is strength and perseverance.

If you wondered, where did the strength came from ?  The answer is, I used to pray a lot. Not hoping for any miracle – but enough strength to come out of the situation I was in, which I had never experienced before.

There was not a single temple or a church or a mosque I did not visit seeking strength. My situation did not change with the prayers. Yet, I had this strength and hope that someday I will be shown the path to come out of it.

I know there are people who pray before an exam or when a loved one falls ill and hope for miracle. Prayers do not work like that. You need not even travel to a particular place of worship for God to hear you. You need a deeper connection with God (if you really believe there is God).

I accidentally stumbled into a group on facebook by the name ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. I had no idea what that group was about, except that I noticed people share their success and challenges and typed ‘Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. I was intrigued to know more about Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo. I did my research on the internet too.

I was curious to know how just a chant can change someone’s lives.

Later, I got introduced to a member in that group, who understood deeply about Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Both of us decided to meet up in a local restaurant for a coffee.

He said ‘Every living being on earth is connected in some way. How someone treats us, what they tell us, how they make us feel is what determines our self-esteem’. There are levels of human mind which we need to conquer.

Whatever happens to us, good or bad, is our own karma. It’s our own thoughts, deeds and actions.

We all have our good and bad karma. I was successful for 15 years – that was good karma. What happened after that was bad karma.

Chanting ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ alleviates bad karma and invites more good karma.

It enlightens us to make the right choice and be with the right people to achieve our goals.

Still  curious to know ‘How does chanting few words alleviate bad karma?’

To understand that concept, we need to understand the power of human brain. The fact that we can think about anything or anyone in this universe in a split second is what makes humans very powerful. Chanting sends out a message to the universe.

The purpose of chanting is to transform our karma in order to realize our true potential. There is no magic here. When we realize our true potential, we have to work towards it. Our goal could be anything, from staying healthy, good friendships, lot of wealth, fame or even travel the world. Our transformed thoughts attract you to people, who will help you achieve your goals.

I have always emphasized the power of words through out this blog. Words are indeed powerful. When we chant ‘Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ , we empower ourselves to face destiny and change it.

One important message I took away from this gentleman is ‘Starting today…’.  The past is gone. The future is ahead of me. I am in control.

The actions I have taken is not to let any criticism or anyone views bog me down. I have cut off from people I knew for a reason.

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is a pledge to oneself never to succumb to adversities and conquer all sufferings.

  1. Hi Sudhir, I found this post interesting in fact, very interesting! I whole heartedly agree with what you have written. We all send out vibrations into the universe with our behaviour, verbalisation and our thoughts. I will start practising the chant….

    1. Indeed Milanka….There are video’s on youtube on how to do the chant. You do it for 5 minutes initially and then increase to 10..then 15 minutes. You will find it challenging initially, but don’t give up.
The purpose is to convert defeat into victory and enlightenment. You gain Buddhahood which alleviates your from bad karma and then set out to achieve what you want to. Only you can do it.
Chanting will help you build your self-esteem and give you the right direction and you work towards it.

  2. A nice post Sudhir. Even I have done this chanting while in hostel. Many of my friends brought it to the circle. We did group chanting and it was very calming, no doubt in that. Thanks for reminding.
