No matter what you do or how well you do it, there will be critics.

For few among us, roughly 20-30% of the world population, who have still not figured out why they exists on this planet, criticizing people seem to be their favorite recreational activity which they can’t resist.

I have always wondered why can’t people just think and talk positive about others. Despite the best of intentions, criticism does not serve it’s purpose.

Every individual attempts to do whatever s/he wishes to do with the best of abilities and information available.

One just can’t criticize others to get what they want and when they want it.  Life doesn’t work that way.

Why constructive criticism just does not work ?

Nowhere does one experience criticism day in and out than in a workplace. Many believe that criticism makes an individual excel at work. It doesn’t matter if you put a positive spin and call it ‘constructive criticism’ – the fact is it doesn’t work.

To understand this, one needs to understand human brain, which goes in defensive mode, the moment the brain receives negative words.

Criticism challenges our identity and our self-worth.

Through out my tenure in my corporate career, I was dead against criticism of team members.

If anyone has watched sports, players do not criticize each other. They just play hard to win. Every game is a series of ups and down and in the end one of the team wins.

I have been in situations when my team works hard for months and in the end you get to hear criticism for something that went wrong instead of appreciation for what went right.

Criticism at work only lowers morale of employees and does nothing good either for the individual or the organization.

Celebrities succeed only due to their hard work

People in creative industry work on their own performances. A negative review from a critic hardly does any good for their confidence. If they have it in them, they strive to get better and better at each performance. Critics play no role in their performance getting better. It is their own hard work and persistence.

A word of encouragement works best when things aren’t going your way

Many do not realize the healing power of words. Simply, because they do not understand how words are interpreted by another human brain.

Our emotions are linked to what we hear or read. When someone praises you, it makes that person’s day.

Criticism is the last thing they want to hear when s/he had a bad day.

Children need encouragement not criticism

For most children, a loud applause for what they learnt on that day, not only makes them smile but also want to learn more.

They need not be criticized if they did not grasp a particular subject. They will learn someday when they have interest in learning that subject. Learning cannot be forced on anyone.

Also, when children grow up in an environment of encouragement, they learn to encourage others and talk positive about others too.

World’s greatest leaders were criticized. We must remember nobody built a statue for their critics.

We are here in this world for a short time. How do you want the world to remember you when you leave this world ?

Someone who was a good critic or someone who spread love and happiness in the world ?

I choose the latter.

  1. I really liked this one. If you allow people, they will live their life and… and yours. YOU have to K.I.M. (keep it moving) and enjoy the ride on your own terms. Let them criticize all they want. Most people need a great big mirror.
